Airport Resource Management Systems

The SMART Airport Resource Management Systems deal with the deployment and utilization of key airport resources such as personnel, equipment and aircraft stands. It facilitates strategic, tactical and daily planning of these resources and real-time-monitoring and decision support.

The Airport Resource Management Systems are made up of the following systems:

SMART Airport Resources Management Systems (SMART/ARMS)

The SMART Airport Resources Management Systems (SMART/ARMS) is based on PRAGA Technology (Java platform), a state-of-the-art multi-tier web-based architecture, accessed entirely via standard Internet browsers. The architecture is fully scalable and projected to allow integration with other systems. SMART ARMS, furthermore, can be customized to exactly match your needs.

SMART ARMS is installed on a central system accessible via the network. The operators of each area or division of the airport can connect to arms using PC, laptops and PDAs. Any modification of data handled is immediately available to all.

SMART ARMS uses open source technology and therefore does not require additional software licenses.

SMART Airport Resource Management System (SMART/RMS)

The SMART Airport Resource Management System is a powerful tool for the Airport to schedule, monitor and instruct key Airport resources ensuring that the right resources are available at the right time and in the right place. It enables the airport to monitor and control ground-handling operations in real-time and expert guidance is provided to effectively reallocate resources.

The SMART RMS enables the Airport to plan the utilization of manpower and equipment on strategic, tactical and operational level as follows:

  • Strategic/long-term capacity planning can be done by performing ‘What-if’ analysis and evaluating the impact of multiple projected operational scenarios on the future need for Airport resources.
  • ‘What-if’ analysis is also useful to evaluate current operations and to establish the best tactics to optimize the deployment of existing resources.
  • The daily operational scheduling of the deployment of Airport manpower and equipment at check-in desks, boarding gates, baggage belts and apron to accommodate the flight schedules is carried out by expert allocation algorithms and is based on pre-defined user servicing rules. Long-standing duty rosters and weekly/daily work schedules are created.

The SMART RMS enables the real-time monitoring and control of ground-handling operations and provides alerts on status changes within operations and potential and actual resource conflicts. Expert guidance is provided or the automated feature can be used to re-allocate resources due to flight changes and variations in resource availability. The Airport Resource Management System ensures that resources are dispatched in a timely manner to the locations where they are scheduled to work.

The SMART RMS automatically generates the optimum resource deployment solution based on:

  • The latest flight information such as aircraft arrival/departure times and the aircraft parking positions on the apron.
  • Availability and position of ground handling equipment and personnel.
  • Intelligent allocation and optimization algorithms.
  • Pre-defined servicing rules.

Resource details, calculated demands and actual utilization statistics are stored in the integrated Airport Operational Data Base System (SMART/AODB) and are available to the other SMART Systems such as Airport Billing System (SMART/BILL) and Statistical Data Management System (SMART/STAT).

SMART Stand Allocation System (SMART/STAND)

The SMART Airport Stand Allocation System is an easy to use, intelligent and cost-effective airport management tool to plan and control the utilization of airport ramps/aprons. It enables the airport to plan and monitor (in real-time) the movement of aircraft on the ground. The SMART/STAND provides an aerial graphical view of the ramp and operators can see the available and allocated stands at any time. The system displays the allocation of stands to the air traffic controller to direct the aircraft to the correct stand/gate.

SMART/STAND can run in either the operating or scheduling mode. In the scheduling mode it is used for stand planning and for ‘what-if’ analysis to evaluate the effect different operational scenarios have on projected operations. This is extremely useful for strategic and tactical capacity and resource planning.

In the operational mode it displays the actual stand allocation based on real-time flight information from the Airport Operational Database System (SMART/AODB). Real-time updates of actual operations are displayed and Airport operators are alerted to status changes and potential and actual conflicts. The operator has expert support from SMART/STAND to re-allocate stand positions and have the option to do automated reallocation.

A user-friendly GUI allows the Airport to load the layout of the stand and capture stand operating rules. These rules include:

  • Stand limitations and characteristics.
  • Aircraft type.
  • Minimum distance between aircraft.
  • Aircraft adjacency consideration.
  • Airport/Airline preferences.
  • Turnaround time constraints.
  • And more.

The automated rule based stand planning is done by using sophisticated allocation algorithms and user-defined rules. A history of the utilization (aircraft and occupancy time) of stands is maintained within the system and the system also allows for the recording of first and last-bag times for statistical analysis and resource planning.

SMART/STAND integrates Airport Operational Data Base System (SMART/AODB) and changes or updates in flight information are immediately available to re-allocate stands if required.

SMART Load Control Data Management System

The SMART Load Control Data Management System is an advanced standalone or integrated aircraft weight and balance system to manage aircraft load distribution and aircraft balancing. Designed with ease of use in mind the SMART/LodeStone can automatically and accurately perform all the airline weight and balance calculations necessary to produce the Loading Instruction (IATA AHM 514), Load Sheet (IATA AHM 517) and other documentation for the freight/baggage loaders and the flight crews.

SMART/LodeStone adheres to the IATA Airport Handling Manual that defines the load control standards to be followed at airports. Designed for use on commercial passenger flights, LodeStone has a bulk loading capability for narrow bodied aircraft and a containerized mode for wide bodied aircraft. SMART/LodeStone can be used to perform weight and balance calculations flights originating at the airport or for transit flights.

The SMART Load Control Data Management System is one of the most cost effective airline weight and balance solutions available on the market today and the modern Graphical User Interface (GUI) greatly simplifies the task of the Load Controller. SMART/LodeStone Integrates with the SMART Departure Control System to avoid the re-entry of data.
